How to Create an Effective Content Marketing Plan
Written by Ashley Phillips
One of the most important aspects of marketing, across all businesses and industries, is content marketing. E-newsletters, blogs, articles, social media interactions and videos are a key way to maintaining connections with former and current customers, while reaching new customers at the same time. These types of interactions create an increase in sales, referrals, and repeat business.
For small businesses, finding the time and discipline to create and publish content on a regular basis can be quite difficult. While many businesses start out strong, after a few months, it can become difficult to balance deadlines and creating the content. On the other hand, having the discipline to constantly create and publish content can be difficult. By building a content marketing plan can help alleviate some of this stress.
To begin a successful content marketing plan, make sure to create clear goals. Figure out exactly what the purpose(s) of your content is. Remember to be specific with your goals, it will be much easier to plan out your content, and then measure its success. If you have numerous goals you want to achieve with your content, perhaps prioritize them. While building your plan, you can use these goals as a blueprint, giving your plan a much needed firm structure.
Secondly, you should create a marketing plan, describing how your business is unique. Consumers are constantly bombarded with content, so it is important to focus on your company’s uniqueness in your industry. One way to gain the advantage is to look at what your competitors offer. Be sure to note what they are charging, and the services they offer in their marketing, as well as the tone and style that they use. Most importantly, it is imperative to know what benefits your product or service provides customers. That is the key to your content.
In order for your content to be effective, you need to decide who your target audience is. You want to create content for a specific demographic, not people in general. When writing your content, make sure to be clear about who your ideal target is and what they are looking for. Some key factors to consider are: lifestyle, occupation, age, income level, shopping habits, family status, and interest in your key demographic(s). Understanding who you are targeting, where, and how they consume content will make it easier to create your message, decide what information to focus on, and which platforms are best.
